KI UNIQUE TOEFL IBT SPEAKING TIPS

Academic speaking tests the examinee’s ability to speak spontaneously and also the conveying power of the candidate in terms of clarity and coherence.
There are 6 questions in all in this section and they are to be answered in a time span of 20 minutes.

BASIC TIPS:

  1. Record 5 minutes about you and try to transplant the conversation done by you.
  2. Practice by imitating your voice, while listening to your own recorded track.
  3. If available, check out for books, CDs etc. in English from libraries.
  4. Imitate a good speaker’s pronunciation.
  5. Self – monitoring pronunciation every day on different topic. Like grammar, word stress etc.
  6. Use phrasal verb and idioms to sound more natural.

SPECIFIC TIPS:

INDEPENDENT TASK 1:

This task includes question types that are urban choice and opinion based on personal experience. One gets 15 seconds to prepare for this task and 45 seconds to speak.

  1. Name a topic, person, place, event etc.State it quite quickly.*
  2. Provide some sort of description.**
  3. Give reasons for your selection.***

INDEPENDENT TASK 2:

This task includes question types that are closed choice questions. One gets 15 seconds to prepare and 45 seconds to speak.

  1. Quickly state preference. #
  2. 2-3 well supported reasons with details and examples for supporting that preference. ##

  1. Provide negative opinion first.
    • Talk about the option you didn’t choose and examples to support it. Devote 20 seconds and then,

  2. Do support reason to avoid vagueness.

INTEGRATED TASK 1:

This task type is integrated as it relates to 3 skills: Read/Listen/Speak. The question type is a notice to university/college relevant to campus life and includes conversation of students presenting opinion about notice.
Person gets 45 seconds to read, 90 seconds to listen to the dialogue, 30 seconds to prepare response and 60 seconds to speak.

  1. Summarize content of reading passage. It can include main idea of notice with couple of important details.*
  2. State the person’s opinion .Remember the person whose opinion is to be stated will be obvious from the dialogues and the instructions. **
  3. State the reasons that the person gave to have that opinion.(atleast 2 )***

INTEGRATED TASK 2:

This task also tests 3 skills: Read/Listen/speak Here candidate gets 45 seconds to read, 30 seconds to note taking and planning and 60 seconds to speak.

  1. State general topic after reading and listening.#
  2. Explain whether the listening of lectures supports or refutes against the principles mentioned in reading passage. ##
  3. 2-4 main ideas which include information in listening that relate back to reading. ###
  4. Always start with listening and present more information from relationship set between various ideas.

INTEGRATED TASK 3:

This includes Listen/speak task type: This task includes an issue or problem related conversation between students. In this task you have 20 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak.

  1. State problem.*
  2. State options that other person presents. **
  3. Personally what suggestions you support? ***
  4. Why you prefer it? ****
  5. It is a combination of reporting information from the dialogue and presenting and supporting your personal opinion in relation to the information provided in the dialogue.
  6. Be careful and don’t make a new suggestion.

INTEGRATED TASK 4:

INTEGRATED TASK 4: This task type tests two major skills: Listen/speak

  1. State idea of lecture, what the lecturer is generally talking about.
  2. Then point out the main idea and introduce sub ideas in a logical way and provide supporting points in 3-4 points through examples or additional explanation with some details.
  3. Work on note taking ability, especially while you listen.
  4. Need to use your preparation time to structure your answers carefully in terms of what sub ideas are.
  5. Don’t try to pass each detail as it is not possible.
  6. Use different styles of vocabulary.
  7. Practice extra listening, as lecture will be listened to once and will not be at slow speed, it will be at normal speed only.
  8. Remember to use your memory as you can’t note everything on paper.
