Academic speaking tests the examinee’s ability to speak spontaneously and also the conveying power of the candidate in terms of clarity and coherence.
TASK TYPES IN SPEAKING

• 2 INDEPENDENT SPEAKING TASKS: In these tasks the examinee has to present his own ideas, opinions , tasks etc.

• 4 INTEGRATED TASKS: It tests more than a single skill of the examinee and so the examinee must make full usage of more than a skill when he / she has to respond for the task.

  • There are in all 6 tasks in this section.
  • There are 6 questions in all in this section and they are to be answered in a time span of 20 minutes.
  • This section is scored on a scale of 0-4 points, which is then convertible to 0-30 scale for calculating the final score of the examinee overall, as well as in individual sections.
  • Like all other sections, even this section is tested through computers only. Examinee is provided with a head set and microphone and he records his/ her response using that only. That recording, when completed, is sent to ETS Online Scoring Network for scoring.

  • The examinee must have following attributes:
    • Quick response.
    • Must respond.
    • Expressive in opinion making
    • Ability to synthesize information in hand

4Academic Course Topic:General/ SpecificA reading passage (75–100 words) broadly defines a term, process, or idea from an academic subject.
• An expert from a lecture (60–90 seconds; 150–220 words) provides examples and specific information to illustrate the term, process or idea from the reading passage.
• The test taker was required to co-ordinate what the expert commented with the passage and convey it accordingly.

5LISTEN/SPEAKCampus Situation Topic: Problem/ SolutionThe listening passage (60–90 seconds; 180–220 words) is a conversation about a student-related problem and two possible solutions.
• The question will ask the examinee about his understanding of the problem and the possible solution of the problem.

6Academic Course Topic:SummaryThe listening passage is an expert from alecture (90–120 seconds; 230–280 words) that explains a term or concept and gives concrete examples to illustrate that term or concept. The question asks the examinee to summarize the lecture and illustrate the understanding of the relationship between the examples and the overall topic.20 seconds60 seconds
